It is one of the most important symbols of the presence of Catholicism in Chile and its establishment as an official religion, with the arrival of the Spanish conquerors in the 16th century. Inside, a crypt houses the remains of archbishops and bishops of Chile. In addition, it highlights the Monument to the Heroes of the Battle of Concepción, which guards the four hearts of the captains fallen in combat.
Today, thousands of faithful visit it every year. It serves as an outstanding setting for activities of national importance, such as the celebration of the Ecumenical Te Deum, a thanksgiving ceremony held every September 18, on the occasion of the celebration of National Holidays. The Metropolitan Cathedral was declared a National Monument in 1951.
